1. Information We Collect
Halal Kashif is designed to be a privacy-first application. Most data used by the app is stored locally on your device and is not transmitted to us.
- Scan History: The app maintains a temporary local record of your most recent product scans for your convenience. This history is stored only on your device.
- Favorites:When you explicitly save a product as a "Favorite", this data is stored in your local database until you choose to remove it.
- Device Data: We may store an anonymous, unique device identifier locally to manage offline database updates and sync status.
- Camera Access: Required for barcode scanning. We do not transmit, store, or share any data from your camera feed. The camera is used solely to detect and read barcodes.
- Crash & Usage Data: We use Google Firebase Crashlytics and Firebase Analytics to detect crashes and understand general app usage. This includes screens visited, app performance, device model/OS version, your Android advertising identifier, and specific in-app actions such as the barcode of a scanned or favorited product, search terms entered, and your selected country. This data is tied to an anonymous installation identifier, not your personal identity.
- App Launch Data: We use Expo Insights to record a basic app-launch event (anonymous installation identifier, app version, platform, OS version) to understand adoption of app updates.
2. Data Storage & Privacy
Your full scan history and favorites list are stored locally on your device and are never uploaded to our servers or sold to anyone. As described above, individual anonymized actions (such as a barcode you scan or favorite, or a search term) are sent to Google Firebase for analytics purposes, but this is tied to an anonymous installation ID, not to you personally, and is never sold to third parties. Your data remains under your control.
3. Third-Party Services
When you search for a product that is not in the local database, the app may query a third-party product API (such as Open Food Facts) to retrieve information. In these cases:
- Only the barcode or search term is sent to the service.
- No personal information, account data, or unique device identifiers are shared with these services.
- These third-party services have their own privacy policies which you may wish to review.
We also use Google Firebase (Crashlytics and Analytics) to monitor app stability and usage trends. Firebase may collect device identifiers, crash logs, and in-app event data - including scanned/favorited product barcodes, search terms, and country selection - as governed by Google's Privacy Policy. This data helps us fix bugs and improve the app and is not used to identify you personally.
We also use Expo Insights (part of Expo Application Services) to record a basic app-launch event containing an anonymous installation identifier, app version, platform, and OS version, as governed by Expo's Privacy Policy. This helps us understand adoption of app updates and is not used to identify you personally.
4. Data Deletion
You can clear your scan history or remove items from your favorites at any time within the app settings. Since all data is stored locally, deleting the application from your device will also permanently remove all locally stored data.
5. Children's Privacy
Our services do not address anyone under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under 13.
6. Changes to This Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Effective Date" at the top.
